What changes the price

  • Panel and inverter tier. A Deye hybrid inverter (10-year full off-grid warranty) costs more than a basic string inverter — but it's the only one we install because it's the only one that holds up in FNQ heat and lets you add batteries later without replacing the inverter.
  • Roof complexity. Tin roofs, single-storey, north-facing = cheapest. Tile, multi-storey, multi-orientation arrays = more rails, more labour.
  • Switchboard upgrade. Older Cairns and Tablelands homes often need a meter-box upgrade ($800–$1,500) before any solar can be connected.
  • Battery addition. A 10 kWh Pytes LV1 residential battery adds roughly $8,000–$9,500 after the federal battery rebate.
  • Travel. We service from Cairns south to Tully, west to Mareeba/Atherton/Ravenshoe — quotes are net of travel for our standard service area.

Why FNQ pricing is different from Brisbane or Sydney

You'll see headline "$2,990 for 6.6 kW" deals out of metro markets. Three reasons those numbers don't translate to Cairns:

  • Cyclone Region C wind ratings. Every roof bracket, rail and clamp from Cardwell north must be rated and engineered for Region C — more hardware, more labour, certified by an engineer.
  • Heat de-rating. Inverters and panels lose output in 35°C+ ambient. We oversize the array and spec inverters that don't throttle in our wet-season heat — cheap kit just stops working in February.
  • Local warranty matters. If your installer is in Brisbane, your warranty is a phone call to a call centre. We're 90 minutes from Cairns, on the road in a service van.

What payback actually looks like in Cairns

With Ergon retail tariffs around 30c/kWh and feed-in around 8c/kWh, self-consumed solar is worth roughly 4× exported solar. That's why battery storage now pays back in 5–7 years in FNQ — every kWh stored and used at night avoids a 30c grid purchase instead of earning 8c.

Typical Cairns numbers we model in customer quotes:

  • 10 kW solar only: $2,200–$2,800/yr saved → ~4 yr payback
  • 10 kW + 10 kWh battery: $3,000–$3,800/yr saved → ~5–6 yr payback
  • 13 kW + 15 kWh battery: $3,800–$4,800/yr saved → ~5–7 yr payback
